What To Look For In A Wedding Videographer

2.3 Million Couples a year join hands in the covenant of marriage. In New Jersey over the past year, it was about 46,000. That means there are millions of people, like you, who are in need of a Professional to either capture their Wedding Day by means of Photography or Videography. In most circumstances, you'll only get married once. Which means, you'll only have one chance to have the perfect Wedding video or collection of Wedding Photos.

How do you know if this Photographer or Videographer you're researching is right for you?

Today, I wanted to give you a couple pointers to help nail down what makes the perfect Videographer for your needs. In a coming soon "Part II" post, we will tackle how to find the perfect Photographer.

But first, let's talk Video.

1) Cost

Let's be honest for a moment. If you were like my Wife and I planning our wedding, the number one criteria for a Videographer is the price of his or her service. According to Google's AI Feature and Wedding Wire as a secondary source, Wedding Videos can accrue a cost, on average, of $2,300. There are a multitude of factors to consider such as Experience, Location, Video Must-Haves, etc. But I mention this statistic because it can be intimidating. When I first researched for a local Videographer for our wedding, I thought, "How can I pay over $2,000 for a videographer plus a Photographer?"

What did we do? What was our solution? Unfortunately, we had to ask ourselves what was more important; a Photographer or Videographer? We did not want to have one or the other.

There was no other option for us.

But what if I told you, there is a way to have your cake and eat it, too?

Hire A Freelancer Over Wedding Company.

Here's the thing, everyone's got to make a living in today's economy; I totally understand. However, when you go on the Internet and search for "Wedding Videographers Near Me," you will only see those who solely rely on Weddings to pay the bills. What does that mean for you? It means inflated service costs. While some Wedding Couples don't mind paying an extra couple hundred dollars to help pay for their Videographer's Mortgage, those who have to have a low budget are at risk of sacrificing a Wedding video in order to pay for other Wedding Necessities.

The bottom line: find a freelance videographer who mostly works part time and you will enjoy the same quality you'd find with those Big Box Companies but at half the cost.

2) Website

When my wife and I were looking for a Videographer, not only were we discouraged based on the average cost of a Wedding Video, but the Videographers' websites we visited were disorganized blobs. Here are a couple common annoyances we experienced with a variety of Videographer Websites:

  • They were confusing to navigate.

  • They included vague information about pricing ($500 off here! Discount Code for 2% off! Etc.)

  • They don't include any full Wedding Videos for portfolio purposes.

  • They have dozens of "Wedding Packages" which makes picking one complicated.

This is why it is important to have a simple website where you can not only watch examples of how this Videographer can work for you, but also create a simple path for you to reach out to them! Why do I need to click 8 different buttons in order to find the information I want?

If Their Website Is Complicated, Skip It.

The bottom line is, if a Videographer's website is overly confusing it means they are trying to hide either a lack of experience or a very high service charge.

3) Versatility

The last point I wanted to touch on today is Versatility. What do I mean by that?

To simply put it, how Versatile is the videographer?

Does the Videographer shoot documentary style? Can they mimic a movie or TV Show for a Theme? Can they provide long form content? How have they had to problem solve during a Wedding Day?

These are the types of questions to ask because it directly relates to what you are looking for with the end-result. I saw this video on Instagram originally, about a Couple located in California who wanted their wedding video to be styled after the hit TV Show, "The Office." Honestly, it was a great Wedding video and props to the Videographer(s) who tackled that huge undertaking with near perfection.

But any ol' Videographer off a Google Search can't and won't do that for you. Why? Unfortunately, some Videographers do not see your Wedding as a special story to tell and instead view it as an easy paycheck. "We'll do slow mo Broll of your Wedding Day, 5 minutes long, and it'll be $2,000." Yeah, no thanks.

That is why it is important to ask the right questions.

What are the various kinds of Wedding Videos they produce? How are the videos tailored to each unique couple?
